Sunday, Jour de nouvelles

I know that I and many of you reading this have clicked this link because of an interest in fashion, style and design (and don't worry I will provide you with that). At the same time, as intelligent, stylish women we should always be aware of what is going on in the world and Sunday will be your day to do that here. 2 things you should know about and why:
1. Libya: This past month marked a full scale revolution in Libya; rebels have launched a full on attack against Qaddafi, the country's leader. Over 50,000 citizens have joined in the protest and request that Qaddafi steps down. The forces on both sides are very violent, including the use of tanks and machine guns, and they are fighting for control of different cities across the country. The rebels have also announced the launch of their own government. Death estimates thus far range from 1,000 to 2,000 people and about 200,000 have fled Libya to nearby countries. 2. John Galliano Fired from DIOR: Galliano's Anti-Semitic remarks first caused his suspension from the company, which has now led to him being fired. The House of Dior has made it clear that it's policies are strongly against Anti-Semitic and other racist attitudes. One of his comments included him saying that he loved Hitler. Sources: CNN.com and People.com

Although on completely different ends of the spectrum, these two news stories are extremely important. I think being educated about international affairs is imperative in being a well-rounded person. When you ask why our gas prices are rising so rapidly, you will have a better understanding why. The story about John Galliano reminds me of the many bullying cases we have seen across the United States recently; cases that need to be stopped. We all should be accepting of other people, hasn't Galliano every heard of "agreeing to disagree." Slurs are not the answer.
